TERMS OF TREATY
Once the Treaty was finally formed there were various contentious terms that caused future problems. Germany was particularly shocked to see some of these terms and their anger helped the fuel their resentment and begin World War Two.
Terms of the Treaty
-Article 8 called for the reduction of national armaments
-Article 10- League Members would help preserve all other member from external aggression
-Article 12-14- The League’s system of settling disputes between nations, from arbitration to the consequence of starting a war.
-Article 22-Addressed the League’s administration of the mandate system.
Parts II and III-Territorial Dispositions
-90 articles dealt w/new National borders.
-Germany lost more than 10% of its area in the territorial settlement.
-Rhineland would be a demilitarized zone
- France claimed rights to the coal-rich Saar River Valley on the grounds that the Germans had deliberately destroyed French coalmines during war
-France also regained Alsace-Lorraine, historically French territory that Germany had seized during 19th Century wars w/France
Parts IV-VII
-Germany lost all private property.
-Restricted the German army to 100,000 men and set limits on stocks of arms, munitions, or any materials.
-No poisonous gasses/chemicals would be available to the Germans for warfare.
-Germany must return prisoners of war and the upkeep of graves of war victims.
-Part VII-This made Germans infuriated because Kaiser Wilhelm II was to be put on trial by an international tribuna. ALso, all the war criminals would be handed over to the Allies for trail. These penalties were thought of as vengeful attempt to blame Germany’s for war and there was no legal basis for the proposal
Parts VII and IX-Reparations and Financial Clauses
-War Guilt Clause- Germany was blamed for the war which led to huge Germany resentment.
-Part IX-Financial Clauses- Used great detail and technical language concerning Germany’s obligation to pay reparations.

-Part X- “Economic Clauses”-Allies could confiscate the private property of German citizens outside of Germanyàwould be considered part of the reparations.
-Part XV- Called for German recognition of certain courts and several other treaties.
