Background on Hitler
In 1923, Hitler attempted to overthrow the German government. He was unsuccessful, and sent to prison for nine months. While in prison, Hitler wrote Mein Kampf, meaning “My Struggle.” Hitler suggested that there were easy solutions to the complex problems the German people faced in the 1920s. He blamed Germany’s problems on its weak government. He said Germany had lost the war because of “a stab in the back.”
How Hitler was perceived by the Broad Masses:
- The German people thought of Hitler as almost a family memberàthe general mass of people (the most devastated), truly trusted him. ‘...Hitler, and Hitler alone, seemed in the end to stand in the eyes of many Germans between them and total annihilation’ (Elias 1996, 387). Men and women had been taken back by his charisma and his powerful speaking style. The Germans were incredibly impressed with his attitude and methods.
His Argument/Thoughts
He blamed outsiders for causing problems in the nation. Hitler argued that if pure Germans known as Aryans controlled the destiny of Germany, it would return to greatness. He completely placed the blame for many of Germany’s problems on one group: the Jews.
By January of 1933, Hitler and his National Socialist (Nazi) party controlled Germany. Once in control him and the Nazis started to go against all the terms written in the Treaty. The Nazis acted quickly against all who opposed their rule and they outlawed all other political parties.
